I'm Alex Kearney, I'm Science at the University of Alberta. I focus on Artificial Intelligence and Epistemology.
I saw "Phantom Limbs" by Kristi Hansen yesterday and I'm still thinking about it. While it wasn't a core theme they were exploring, it raised questions about how digital representations do and don't reflect us back. As automation finds its way deeper into our lives, how do those systems reflect us back and alter our self-perception?
The stage uses motion-capture as a controller for a 3D dot-matrix sculpture. Kristi is a dancer with an amputation, and as she moves through the space the motion capture glitches and intermittently "fills in" the missing limb. She draws an explicit connection between the machine connecting the missing dots, and her phantom limb syndrome psychologically filling in what isn't there anymore.
